Expanding Our Medical Device Machining Capabilities

V&S Engineering has significantly expanded its medical device machining capabilities to meet the growing demand for precision-manufactured surgical instruments, implant components, and diagnostic equipment. This expansion includes the addition of clean-room machining environments, specialized tooling for biocompatible materials, and enhanced quality processes aligned with FDA 21 CFR Part 820 requirements and ISO 13485 standards. Our aerospace-grade precision translates naturally to the medical field, where tolerances of ±0.0002" and surface finishes below 16 Ra are standard requirements for implantable devices.

Processing biocompatible materials requires a specific combination of experience, equipment, and process controls. Our expanded capabilities now include dedicated machining protocols for titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-7Nb), 316L and 17-4PH stainless steels, cobalt-chrome alloys, and PEEK polymers used in spinal, orthopedic, and cardiovascular applications. These materials present unique machining challenges — titanium's low thermal conductivity and work-hardening tendency, cobalt-chrome's abrasiveness, and PEEK's thermal sensitivity — each requiring optimized cutting parameters, tool geometries, and coolant strategies that our team has refined through extensive process development.

The clean-room machining capability ensures that medical components are manufactured in a controlled environment that meets particulate contamination requirements. Combined with our AS9100D-certified quality management system — which already exceeds the requirements of ISO 13485 in many areas — this provides medical OEMs with a supplier that understands both the technical and regulatory demands of the industry. Our traceability systems track every raw material lot, every tool, and every process parameter, providing the complete documentation chain that FDA compliance requires.

We see the medical device market as a natural extension of our core competencies in precision CNC machining, tight-tolerance work, and rigorous quality management. The same capabilities that make V&S a trusted supplier for aerospace and defense primes — our commitment to zero defects, our investment in inspection technology, our experienced machinists, and our responsive project management — are precisely what medical device manufacturers need in a contract machining partner. We're actively pursuing new medical programs and welcome the opportunity to support your next device development or production requirement.
